17 September 2017 Camp and EOTC Week were a great success. It saw many of our tamariki achieving things they had never tried before. They took on new challenges and faced fears. They were all striving to be the best we can be. We can't be more proud of their caring towards each other. Really showing ORCA Values. Please ask your tamariki to share with you any work they have done sharing their memories and experiences. Many have produced slide shows, poems, narratives, thank you letters and more. Every tamariki was shared into a folder of photos to look at and talk about with their whanau. Please do not put any of these photos onto social media sites, due to privacy. Reading and Book Day: Last week we had a day of celebrating reading. We chose books to read with a buddy from another class in our VLC, our teachers all swapped rooms and read some fun stories and we even had special visitors to read their favourite books to us. Thanks to our special visitor...
Can you guess who it is?
There WAS a monster at the end of that book. Thank you so very much Troy for taking time out of your busy day to read to us. It was very entertaining.
It is the last 2 weeks of the term and it will be very busy.

Please check that you have everything on the gear list and everyone is prepared for all types of weather.
For the camp we need to provide our own morning and afternoon teas, these are not included in the catering. We would like all the tamariki in O1, O2 and L4 to bring some home baking and T1 and T2 tamariki to bring fruit, please. This will be kept in our communal kitchen area and will be shared out during our morning and afternoon tea times. If you are sending containers please try to send in ice cream containers or the like so that we don’t lose them. If you are sending a good container please make sure it is named clearly so that we can return it to you. Those tamariki with specific dietary needs will need to bring their own snacks enough for at least 6 snack times.
On Monday and Tuesday before camp we will be doing activities in class to explore information about Kawau Island, Camp Bentzon and our rotation activities. Tamariki are to wear uniform on these days and may bring their devices on Monday as we will be able to use them for finding information.
A reminder that everyone needs to make their own way to the Gulf Harbour Ferry on Wednesday 6 September and meet between 9.15am and 9.30am please. Everyone will also need to be picked up from Gulf Harbour on Friday 8 September at 2.30pm.

21 August 2017
Last week we went on a little adventure around the neighbourhood.
This activity encouraged the tamariki to co-operate, negotiate and share. It helps them to understand refugees and to better empathise with their situation.
The tamariki were grouped into refugee families. Each group
simulated the journey of a family escaping from the dangers of war.
At the different stations, we stopped at there were a few challenges for them. One of the family was blindfolded, so the other members of the family needed to guide them through the rest of their journey. At another stop, someone was hurt and couldn't walk. The whanau had to work together to get them safely to their destination.
Each whanau group was only allowed to take 6 things to help them on their way. At each stop, they needed to make a group decision about which item or items they needed to leave behind as they could no longer carry them. This meant that by the time they arrived at their final destination where they had to catch a boat across the sea they had to use whatever they had left to negotiate passage on a boat. Many interesting discussions were had along the way.
This week's reminders:
Year 4: Remember to give your parents the newsletter you received today about camp. This reminds everyone what they need to get ready and bring to camp. Please take the time to read it.
There is a camp meeting for parents who are coming with us on Thursday evening at 6.30pm in the staffroom.
Year 3: An email went out to all parents this afternoon about your activities for EOTC week 4-8 September. Please read. We need at least 6 adults with us on each day to help with activities. If you can help out please email me asap on rosborne@wgp.school.nz
Cross country is this Friday for all Year 3 and 4 students at 12.30pm at Edith Hopper Park. This is a fun run only and there will be no place getting competition. It will involve many fun filled activities like water slide and obstacles. Please remember to bring in your sponsorship form this week.
Check in meeting with parents and teachers are tomorrow so school finishes at 12.30pm.
Teaching Inference:Today there was a 'crime scene' set up in our classroom. There was a myriad of clues for the tamariki to INFER what might have happened, who was there and why they were there. It is amazing how we use inference every day from how we are going to dress, by looking at the weather to what is happening to one of our buildings around the school. We also discussed how INFERENCE is used in cartoons to portray a message and how INFERENCE is used in sentences in our reading and writing. Get your child to tell you about their discoveries today. They also have some sentences and photos on their Chrome Book that they talked about with a buddy. OBSERVE WONDER INFER What do I notice? What does this make me think? What do I think is really happening? 14 August 2017 You guessed it .. this week is maths week so we will be doing MATHS MATHS MATHS Get your child to show you our "O1 Learning Space". They have this book marked on their Chrome Book.
Team Osborne Assembly
Friday 18th 2.20pm
Please could your child bring in a pair of odd socks to wear to our Team Assembly this Friday afternoon.
Please put in a named plastic bag so we don’t lose them!
We are celebrating INDIVIDUALITY this week.
6 August 2017 Week 2 was another busy week with lots of learning opportunities. Unfortunately, I am yet to upload a couple of slide presentations done by Skye and Sofie and a new one by Ana about her new glasses. I will keep working on it. Cross Country training: On Monday we will be heading to the beach to take a run along it and soak in the beautiful surroundings. We are doing this as there is no formal cross country due to some classes being out of school. We will leave at 1.35pm, walk down to Big Manly and run, jog walk from one end to the other. It will be the first time we have been out of school as a VLC and hope that our older tamariki take on the care of the younger ones. Wednesdays Cross country training will be as usual. Don't forget to bring a change of clothes and suitable running shoes for each of these days. We all had a go at juggling last week - lots of fun and intense concentraition from some. Watch out for your apples, oranges, lemons etc everyone as our tamariki might start using those to practise with. Inquiry: we looked at what might be happening after an emergency and made our own lists of things we should pack if we have to evacuate our homes. This will be our main discussion point in the next few days. We will be learning how to challenge someone's ideas RESPECTFULLY. I wonder what I would take? What does it depend on? What are the important things? How do I know? Writing: Mrs O went on a course on Saturday and was inspired by some poetry so she will be sharing some ideas this week. There once was a class called O1 Who endeavoured to always have fun They were smiley and curious Joked around not usually serious And announced that Learning is FUN Hopefuly our tamariki can do better 30 July 2017 Wow what an incredible first week back. I was so very impressed with our first day inquiry of setting up the classroom. Tamariki took on the challenge and went about planning, discussing, testing and presenting their ideas. Two of our akonga even made a Slide Show showing the depth of thought put into the process. Come on in and see what all the tamariki in O1 did with the room. We also looked at multiplication and division. We made some anchor charts for the wall and we all know about:
14 ÷ 2 = 7
14 ÷ 7 = 2
Knowing this will help us solve multiplication and division problems. We will be using these skills this week to solve word problems.
!!! Our whole VLC will be beginning an initiative aimed at encouraging students to learn their times tables with certificate awarding and graduation ceremonies for achievements reached. Parent involvement and support for this will be invaluable and so I do encourage you to ask your tamariki what times table they are currently working on and to help them with their efforts. We were 'speed teachers' this week and taught others about our Emergency Procedure Drills at school. This week we will be looking at "WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?" "WHAT IF THE EMERGENCY WAS REAL _ WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT?" If anyone has been in a real emergency situation and would like to come and share their experience with us we would really appreciate the time and this would give us a little insight into how people cope in times of emergency. Cross Country Training starts this week and weather permitting wil be on Every Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday. Tamariki who wish to bring a change of clothes in a named bag then will be given the chance to change into them during break time. We want ALL O1 to participate in whatever capacity they can: whether that be walking, skipping, jogging or racing is up to each person. All children will at least walk unless they have a note from home. We will be setting ourselves goals each week so that hopefully everyone is pushing themselves to do better in some way. Reminder to all year 4's - please get your camp Health and Permission forms in to your teacher by Friday 4 August - that is this Friday! These were sent out on Friday 28 July and also emailed to each family - if you lose your form please check your emails. Thank you | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
